5 Important Rules in Website Design
When it comes to your website, extra attention must be paid to every detail every minute to ensure optimal performance to meet its objectives. Here are seven rules of thumb that need to be considered to ensure your website is performing well.
1) Don't use a splash page
The splash page is the first page that you see when you arrive at a website. They usually have very beautiful images with words like "welcome" or "click here to enter". In fact, they are just that - beautiful vases with no real purpose. Don't let your visitors have a reason to click the "back" button! Give them the value of your site up front without the opening page.
2) Don't use excessive banner ads
Even the most internet savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner ads so that you will waste valuable real estate websites. Instead, provide more valuable content and put relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being encouraged to buy.
3) Have a simple and clear navigation
You must provide a navigation menu that is simple and very easy so that even small children will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash-based menus or multilevel drop-down menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate, they will leave your site.
4) Have a clear indication of where the user is located
When visitors are very busy browsing your site, you must make sure that they know which part of their site at that time. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any part of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means "leave ship"!
5) Avoid using audio on your site
If your visitors will stay long on your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they are not interrupted by some audio looping on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have control over it - the volume on or off control will function properly.
